MUST BE MONTESSORI

be your own kind

Here at Must Be Montessori, we're always looking for ways to support you and your student with Montessori-inspired activities that you can do at home. The key to doing Montessori at home is not so much in buying expensive materials, though certain products are worthwhile.

With the learning activities below, you will find that you can use relatively inexpensive things or use household items that you already have to show your student lessons that Dr. Montessori created.

SMELLING AND FEELING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOIL

What you'll need:

soil, sand, compost

bowls or containers

How to do it:

Collect different types of soil, sand, compost, etc, into different bowls or containers. Take turns closing your eyes and smelling each. After smelling them, use your hands to feel them and try to figure out which is each.

Helpful tip:

Add water to each of the containers to enhance the feel of the different textures.

MAKING AND TASTING FRUITY WATER

What you'll need:

3 varieties of frozen fruits

3 large glasses

water

bread

How to do it:

Everyone loves a taste test, right? What could be better for a hot, summer day than refreshing, fruit water? Choose 3 or more fresh or frozen fruits and separate them into their own large glass. Cover with water and allow them to rest for 30 minutes or until the water takes on the taste of the fruit. Taste one (wearing a blindfold can turn this into a fun guessing game). Record your guess or any observation about the taste. Cleanse your palette with bread.

Helpful tip:

Crackers or tortilla chips can be used as an alternative to bread for cleansing.

STREAMER PLAY

What you'll need:

ribbons, streamers, or strips of construction paper

stick or dowel

How to do it:

We might not be able to see the air around us, but we can see and hear its effects. Tie some colorful ribbons, leftover party streamers, or long strips of construction paper to a stick and watch what air does as you run, skip and twirl your way through the yard or down the sidewalk. What is your favorite way to play with it? Can you hear the air moving through the streamers?
