MBM Works Montessori Activity - Memorial Day
MEMORIAL DAY
Originally titled Decoration Day in 1868, the day was to honor fallen soldiers lost in the Civil War by decorating their graves with flowers. Today Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May to honor all men and women that have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Military. As an annual tradition, at Arlington Cemetery and many places around the country, a small American flag is placed on each grave.
TRACE
After sharing the history about the holiday ask your child to trace the words "memorial day". Based on your child's level and interest allow them to trace the letter using their pointer finger, a spindle or a pencil. As your child completes a letter have them make the corresponding sound or you may say the sound and have them mimic you.
CUT & PLACE
Based on your child's ability have them cut out each flag and flower or you may cut them out for them. Have your child decorate the memorial for each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
TIP
The page is designed for the bottom half to be cut off leaving the majority of the page in tact. We recommend that you laminate the top portion of the page, the flag and flower pieces. All that's left is to place all parts neatly into a child size wooden tray.
