Rounding numbers strips

What You'll Need

  • Rounding numbers strips
  • A list of numbers
  • A bead

How to Do It

Invite your students to a rug. Tell them that you are going to show them how to round numbers to the nearest 10. Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was. Bring the rounding strips to the mat and place it in order from 1 to 100. Bring a number and put them in the top middle. For example 8, bring the 0 to 10 strip and put the bead in the number eight. Ask the student to which ten is close 8, to 0 or to 10 and they will see that it is only one number in order to be 10 and 7 numbers to be 0. The answer will be 10.

Helpful Tips

A lot of students struggle with rounding numbers. This job helps to show them in a concrete way how to round numbers. They can see it in a tangible way and then they can choose the proper answer.
